COWBOYS' KICKER BUEHLER DUSTS D-BACK

Rookie defensive back DeAngelo Smith doubted the speed of fellow fifth-round pick David Buehler and paid for it with a public embarrassment.

Smith and Buehler, locker room neighbors who had exchanged good-natured trash talk throughout training camp, staged a 50-yard race at the end of practice. Buehler won by a full step, much to the amusement of the rest of the defensive backs.

"A lot of people were telling him it's all downside," said Buehler, whose fastest 40 at the combine was 4.56. "If you win, you know, you're supposed to beat a white kicker. It is what it is. I'm just being honest.

"A lot of players were telling him it's a lose-lose situation, but I just kept getting in his ear and talking. He just got frustrated and wanted to do it."

Smith, who is primarily playing safety in large part because he lacks elite speed, was a gracious loser, saying Beuhler beat him fair and square. But Smith wants a rematch.

Buehler is willing to race almost anybody on the Cowboys.

"Well, I know Newman is fast," Buehler said. "I'm probably not going to mess with him."

Good thing, since the last thing the Cowboys need is for Newman to pull a muscle racing the world's fastest kicker.
