With the highly anticipated early matchup of two Big XII schools this week, I thought it would be appropriate to look at some big games in the past between Texas Tech and Texas. Checkout my countdown of the Top 5 most memorable matchups between these two rivals [please note I only considered games I personally witnessed or watched on TV, so these will only reflect games from the 90's to the present]:
#5
Longhorns 35, Red Raiders 31
Oct. 28, 2006 [Lubbock]:
Graham Harrell threw for 519 yards and unranked Texas Tech had No. 5 Texas down 21-0 in the first quarter, but the Longhorns' defense took over in the second half. Texas held Texas Tech scoreless in the final two quarters and allowed -1 yard rushing in the game to earn the win.
#4
Red Raiders 42, Longhorns 35
Nov. 14, 1998 [Lubbock]:
Texas' Ricky Williams was on his way to a Heisman Trophy, but Texas Tech's Ricky Williams counteracted him with 12 more rushing yards. The biggest run came from quarterback Rob Peters, whose 3-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left completed a 22-point fourth quarter for Texas Tech.
#3
Longhorns 43, Red Raiders 40
Nov. 15, 2003 [Austin]:
In a rare moment for Texas, benching quarterback Vince Young paid off. Chance Mock came in with two minutes left to drive the No. 6 Longhorns to the winning touchdown with 46 seconds remaining. Keith Toogood missed a 48-yard field goal attempt for unranked Texas Tech as time expired.
#2
Red Raiders 42, Longhorns 38
Nov. 16, 2002 [Lubbock]:
Texas Tech had never upset a higher-ranked opponent before this victory over No. 4 Texas. Senior Kliff Kingsbury carved up the nation's fifth-best defense for six touchdown passes, and junior Wes Welker had 14 catches, 169 receiving yards and 247 all-purpose yards.
#1
Red Raiders 39, Longhorns 33
Nov. 1, 2008 [Lubbock]:
This battle of 8-0 teams had a record home crowd, a national TV audience and a thrilling ending. No. 1 Texas trailed 22-6 at halftime but rallied to take the lead with 1:29 left in the fourth quarter. But Graham Harrell found Michael Crabtree for a 28-yard touchdown with one second left to clinch the win for No. 6 Texas Tech.
